Fully Restored McIntosh MR-55 AM/FM Tuner/Preamp - First Mac Tuner!

For sale is a fully restored and aligned McIntosh MR-55 AM/FM mono tuner/preamp in a gorgeous original refinished factory mahogany cabinet! This all tube tuner has incredible performance and pulls in stations beautifully! And it does have two outputs so it can easily be integrated into any stereo system easily. Or an MPX adapter can be added if stereo FM is wanted.

Cosmetically this is a very nice overall unit with a clean, nearly mark free faceplate and a nice rust/corrosion free chassis. The gold has some typical wear The glass is still clean, lettering is still sharp and the display pops beautifully with the LED upgrades. Please study the pictures carefully and ask any questions you have!

For the electronics restoration, first the entire power supply is rebuilt from the ground up with new electrolytic caps discretely wired in under the chassis and disconnecting the originals internally. All capacitors are rated for 105 degrees, long life, low impedanxe and all parts used are overrated for the application so reliability won't be an issue in the future. The rest of the tuner needed minimal changes - mostly a few old cap types that needed replacing. Then all tube sockets and controls are cleaned, the entire unit is detailed inside and out and all lights are replaced with LEDs. The final step is a full alignment of all circuits so the tuner performers as wonderfully as it looks.

As far as the sound/performance goes, it's an excellent sounding tuner that pulls in the stations amazingly well in AM and FM - especially with the FM AFC turned on. All features works flawlessly and sounds incredibly lush and full - exactly what you would want out of a tube tuner...it doesn't sound like you're listening to FM at all on a strong station!! The sound quality can rival the best sources!
