Signature Jazzmaster Loaded Pickguard - tortoiseshell

Neck - 8.3k - alnico III
Bridge - 10.3k - alnico V bar magnets

I’m so pleased that Dave Hunter and Guitar Player Magazine recognized what is one of my favorite sets of pickups with the Editors’ Pick Award in the September 2024 issue.

Definitely the most versatile set of Jazzmaster pickups while still sounding like they belong in a Jazzmaster. Fatter coils in both positions to thicken the overall tone… the neck pickup has twelve alnico III magnets which retain a beautiful jangle while the bridge pickup had twelve screws and two bar magnets in a my signature P90 style construction. The doubling up of the rod magnets (neck) and polepiece screws (bridge) makes both of these pickups more lively and responsive. This is particularly important in the bridge position to get that fat P90 tone without it sounding out of place in a Jazzmaster. From the review:

“Loaded into a Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster and tested into a tweed Deluxe-style 1x12 combo and a 65amps London head and 2x12 cab, the Signature Jazzmaster set quickly converted this popular offset into a guitar capable of far more than surf rock or indie jangle-pop. Indeed, it revealed sounds that can tackle just about anything in the broad rock-pop spectrum, yet with unique voices that help it stand out from the crowd. Where traditional Jazzmaster pickups can occasionally be a little splatty and over-egged in upper-register overtones, the Signature set stops short of anything harsh or spikey. The result is a set that’s easy to dial in both clean and overdriven. My own 1965 Jazzmaster, as much as I love it and as great as it sounds, occasionally struggles to maintain its composure into heavier overdrive or distortion settings; not so the Stonewall Signature Jazzmaster set, which avoided overbalancing on either the sizzle or the mud when pumped through a JHS Angry Charlie and a Tsakalis Six overdrive.”

“There’s more girth in the bridge position than found in most JMs, for sure, with appealing texture and just a touch of granularity to add extra character to the sound, yet not quite the midrange hump of many P90s. As such, it does remain extremely snappy and articulate, yet thick and full, too—a difficult trick to pull off. The neck pickup is much as Miller intended: a fatter take on the traditional Jazzmaster neck position. It has the sparkle-with-warmth of a vintage-style unit, but is a little more balanced overall, and without the wooliness I sometimes hear from the lower wound strings via the JM neck position.”

“Amid these options, though, the middle position is perhaps the most pleasant surprise here: rather than fighting each other, the differently designed pickups merge into a voice that’s chimy, thick, funky and firm all at once. Brighter yet possibly more full and balanced than either pickup on its own, it’s a real treat, and more broadly usable than many middle-position tones I’ve encountered.”

“Miller has come up with a truly versatile JM pickup set in the Signature Jazzmaster pair, and anyone who loves this offset format but seeks a broader palette from their guitar would do well to check them out. It’s also refreshing to find a maker who’s willing to stride out with more original designs when so many of the boutique pickup winders today are primarily trying to prove how close they can come to vintage specifications and looks. These pickups pay dividends in their range and voicings as a result, and earn an Editors’ Pick Award for the achievement.”

Options for covers are white, aged-white, cream, and black.

All Jazzmaster pickups come stock with a flat magnet stagger.

We stock pickguards for American made Fender Jazzmasters but can also get pickguards for Professional, Performer, Special, Classic Player, Japanese made, Mexican made, as well as others and left-handed versions. I can also get Warmoth Jazzmaster pickguards. Just let us know.

There are other pickguard materials available. If there is an option that you want that you don’t see here, please contact us and we can customize the pickup to your specifications.

If there is an aesthetic option that you want, which is not listed in the item options menu, please contact us and we can customize the pickup to your specifications.

All Stonewall Pickups are hand-wound (scatter-wound). When a coil is machine-wound, each turn of the wire lies directly next to the previous turn. This causes a loss of treble frequencies. If you've never owned hand-wound pickups, you are in for a treat: the clarity of tone and frequencies really comes through. Very open sounding with great string definition.

All Stonewall Pickups are vacuum wax potted to prevent microphonics. If you would prefer your pickups to not be potted (noisy but my favorite for recording), be sure to mention it when we email you regarding your pickup options.

All pickups are made to order and we have received a huge number of orders recently. Please allow 2-3 weeks from the time of order for us to craft and ship your pickups. Once your order is placed, we will send you a confirmation email to verify the specs and options and ensure you are getting exactly what you want.
