Rosewood richness with a calm, balanced voice — the connoisseur's Martin dreadnought, the D-35.
The D-35 first appeared in 1965. With restrictions on Brazilian rosewood making the large boards for two-piece backs harder to source, Martin introduced its now-signature three-piece back construction. It has been a favorite for decades, and it remains a classic alternative to the D-28.
Sound
This D-35 has a warm, full midrange. The bracing is set slightly lower than on other models, so the low end stays modest while the highs ring out clear and beautiful. It's a voice quite different from the loud, punchy "bomber" style dreadnought: soft, rich, and well balanced. Strummed chords have real body from the midrange, and fingerstyle stays balanced and clear.
Use
Because it doesn't push forward as much as the 40-series models, it sits comfortably in a band mix and pairs beautifully with vocals. It's equally at home for singer-songwriters, fingerpickers, and recording work.
What makes this guitar special
The appeal of this D-35 is the combination of rosewood's beauty and a restrained, easy-to-live-with voice. It has the presence of a rosewood dreadnought without overpowering the song, which is why it's often chosen by players who know what they want. Having spent more than thirty years settling in, the wood now offers a deeper, more mature tone.
Condition
The binding on the back has been re-glued, and there's some lacquer wear on the back of the neck. Apart from that, there are only light scratches and no prominent damage — this guitar is in good overall condition.
The neck is nearly straight with plenty of truss rod adjustment left in both directions. The saddle still has height remaining, so there is also plenty of room to adjust the action. The frets have roughly 70% or more life remaining. Action is 2.0mm (1st string) / 2.7mm (6th string). Weight is approximately 2.1kg. The guitar will ship in a hard case.
Why this guitar
If you want a Martin that's a little different from the usual D-28, with the warmth of rosewood and a refined balance, this D-35 is the one. A clean, well-kept example that's ready to play the day it arrives — don't miss the chance to make it yours.
