Andy's back today with another one of his favorite vintage pedals: the Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz. Though Boss has iterated on the series since this 20-year-old pedal's release, bringing to market newer boxes that use modeling technology, the FZ-2 has an all-analog circuit based on the old Univox Super Fuzz.
Like the Super Fuzz, the FZ-2 features two unique voicings: the mid-range-heavy mode one, reminiscent of Pete Townshend's Live at Leeds tone, and mode two, with its classic scooped sound that Andy showcases in the beginning of the demo with an Electric Wizard riff.
But unique to the FZ-2 is the concentric pot that gives players active bass and treble control—a rare offering for a fuzz pedal. The FZ-2's last mode is a clean boost that still lets players dial in the active tone controls.
