The Akai XE8 is a 1U rack-mount MIDI drum expander module from 1988, built around a 16-bit PCM sound engine drawing from 1MB of internal ROM. It provides 48 sampled drum sounds in total — 16 internal plus 32 more accessible via two optional ROM card slots (one front-panel, one rear) — with 8-voice polyphony throughout. Each sound can be tuned across 16 semitones, layered, and shaped with pitch sweep, VCA modulation, and amplitude envelopes, and assigned freely to any MIDI note. On the I/O side it offers a mono mix output, eight individual mono voice outputs, a headphone output, and full MIDI In/Out/Thru — making it a flexible backbone for a MIDI drum rig. The interface relies on dual-concentric controls and small LED displays without sound-name readouts, so the learning curve is real, but the editing depth and individual outputs reward the effort.
A great opportunity to own a Akai XE8 at this price point.
