The SQRT is my take on the old Russian pi's. I tightened up the low end, reduced the range of frequencies being clipped by the first distortion stage to increase articulation, reduced the EQ range a bit (the extreme, mostly unusable end positions of the original tone control), and I added the popular 'shift' control which acts to widen/deepen the mid-scoop or reduce it. It's got the sound of a Russian big muff, but with tight enough low end to palm-mute with clarity, more articulation between notes, and improved tone stack.
This circuit does have some of the normal DHA tricks to reduce noise, but it is NOT gated like most other designs!
