The story of the YAMAHA SG began in 1965 with then-YAMAHA president Genichi Kawakami's directive to create something 100% original. What started as a challenge to show Japan's own identity to the world, rather than just copying overseas designs, was eventually shaped by a meeting with legendary guitarist Carlos Santana.

Simply going through-neck wasn't enough to achieve the sustain length and attack focus Santana demanded - it took construction that broke with the guitar-building conventions of the era. The SG2000 is the result of that effort and dedication, something mass production could never replicate.

Debuting in July 1976 as the direct realization of Santana's vision, it has remained the absolute flagship of the YAMAHA SG line ever since - now marking half a century since its birth as one of Japan's enduring masterpieces.

Despite the through-neck construction, the top uses a labor-intensive T-Cross construction with a luxurious maple cap bonded to the body, combining the overwhelming sustain of a through-neck with the clear, defined attack of maple.

A substantial brass sustain block is embedded directly beneath the bridge, transmitting string vibration deep into the body for that endlessly sweet, sustained tone Santana loved.

It directly inherits the specs of the legendary SG175B custom model built for Santana - the symmetrical body shape and elegant appointments radiate the commanding aura of a true flagship.

Fifty years since its 1976 debut, this model remains the backbone of the entire YAMAHA SG line, captivating legendary players on stages and in studios worldwide. For guitarists after unforgettable sustain and an unmistakably YAMAHA original, this flagship has no equal.
