Up for sale is a 1967 Yamaha FG-150 in Natural finish, built by Nippon Gakki in Japan — one of the earliest FG-series guitars and a direct ancestor to the beloved "red label" era that followed. These early FG-150s are known for solid, straightforward build quality and a warm, dry vintage voice that's become increasingly hard to find in good playing condition.
This example has been brought back to life with real, professional luthier work — not a cosmetic refresh, but a full functional overhaul:
- Complete refret — all new frets installed by a professional luthier, restoring proper fret height, clean crowning, and buzz-free playability across the whole neck. This alone resets the clock on the guitar's playability for years of use.
- Grover open-back tuning machines — replacing the aged original tuners with smooth, accurate, and reliable vintage-style Grovers, dramatically improving tuning stability.
- Bone nut and saddle — hand-cut and fit for improved sustain, note definition, and tuning consistency over the factory synthetic parts.
- Bone bridge pins — completing the tone-transfer upgrade to match the new saddle.
- All upgrades, parts and labor above (and case mentioned below: ~$800 (pretty much the original value of the guitar, if completely original)
All work was performed by a professional luthier. This is a guitar that's ready to be played hard, not babied — a genuine vintage voice paired with modern reliability.
Included: Yamaha AG2-HC Acoustic Guitar Hardshell Case — a proper, well-fitted hardshell case to protect your investment during transport and long-term storage. No scrambling to find a case that fits right — it ships ready to travel.
Guitar is in good very playable condition. I am a luthier, guitar player of 20 years. I'll say this about this guitar: the crack in the heel of the neck has not grown over the course of the two years I've owned it - I have zero concerns about it. Additionally, the overall condition is good for a guitar of this age, and my personal use for this guitar and view of it is a travel guitar you don't have to worry about. You can set it on the ground and not worry about it getting scratched. Keep it in your car all the time so it's always on hand (it's a plywood guitar, no issues with humidity changes). It's really just a good playing and sounding guitar without the stress of a new instrument much pricier.
