Every legend needs a doorway, and this one stood on West 48th Street, Manhattan's old "Music Row," where in 1978 an Argentine dreamer named Rudy Pensa opened Rudy's Music Stop. The shop smelled of lacquer and possibility. Through its narrow door passed the city's finest hands: Lou Reed, Eric Clapton, and a soft-spoken Glaswegian named Mark Knopfler.

In 1984, a young builder from New Jersey joined the fold. John Suhr worked in the back room the way a watchmaker works: quietly, precisely, obsessively. From that cramped space, around 1985–86, the Pensa-Suhr name was born, custom guitars of rare refinement in an age of loud excess.

Then came 1988. Knopfler asked for something singular and received the MK-1, its flame maple carved like water over mahogany, with EMGs and a Floyd Rose. That June, under the lights of Wembley for Mandela's 70th birthday, the guitar sang "Money for Nothing" beside Clapton, and a back-room creation became an icon.

In 1991, Suhr moved on, first to Fender's Custom Shop, then to found Suhr Guitars in California. But the bench did not stay empty. Stephen Marchione, a luthier raised on the old violin-making traditions, took up the work before pursuing his own path in New York City, then Houston.

The guitar offered here was born in that very moment: a fantastic Pensa-Suhr built by Stephen Marchione in 1992, carrying John Suhr's Mark Knopfler EMG circuit modification. It is in superb condition, and it plays and sounds wonderfully.

High-definition pictures and videos will be sent to genuinely interested buyers. If the guitar remains unsold, a shoot is scheduled this summer with a renowned French photographer, including the production of a physical book with stunning images and the full history of this instrument.
