Multivox Big Jam SE-13 Space Driver — Vintage Japanese Distortion (Very Good Condition, Notable Provenance)
***Video demo on YouTube - see link***
A genuinely collectible piece of 1970s Japanese effects history: the Multivox Big Jam SE-13 Space Driver. For collectors and tone purists who know the Big Jam line, this needs little introduction — the series has earned a devoted following for its distinctive voicings, sturdy build, and the kind of vintage character that simply doesn't survive into modern reissues. The Space Driver is one of the more coveted entries in the catalog and rarely surfaces in this kind of shape.
Provenance: This item means a great deal to me. I'm listing it only because, as much as I love the tone, it's probably best to pass this extraordinarily rare pedal onto someone who values it more as a collector's item or for use. To the best of my knowledge, this pedal had one prior owner — the late Alan "Addison Al" DeCarlo, guitarist and vocalist of the Chicago bands Bangor Flying Circus and Madura. By pure happenstance, it came to me directly as a gift from DeCarlo's son. I ask that any potential buyer please honor DeCarlo's legacy and work in spirit. DeCarlo's life and work has been documented in Daniel Meza's 2-part film "The Unfamous Life of Alan DeCarlo". The film is available to watch on YouTube.
DeCarlo (1948–2018) was an underrated player with a real cult following among fans of Chicago psych and progressive rock, and for a collector who values that connection, it's a rare chance to own a piece of gear with a direct line to him. (Note for accuracy: the SE-13 postdates the Bangor/Madura album years, so this was likely part of his later personal gear rather than anything used on those records.)
This is an original, unmodified unit in very good condition. Everything is correct and functioning exactly as it should: powers up perfectly, footswitch engages cleanly, and every control sweeps smoothly with minimal to no scratchiness, crackle, or signal dropout.
I've documented it thoroughly for serious buyers. The photos show the actual cosmetic condition in detail, and the demo video lets you hear the real circuit before you buy — no guessing, no surprises.
Why this one matters to a collector:
- Notable provenance — single prior owner with an honest and direct chain
- Original and unmodified — increasingly rare for vintage Big Jam units, which were often opened up and tinkered with
- One of the more sought-after voices in the Big Jam series
- Excellent cosmetic condition for its age, with no significant wear (see photos)
- A piece that's getting genuinely difficult to find, full stop — these don't resurface often
If you've been hunting for a clean Space Driver — let alone one with a story like this — you already know how seldom the opportunity comes up. Priced for what it is: an honest, original example with a connection that won't be easy to replicate.
Ships double-boxed and packed with extreme care. Happy to provide additional photos, close-ups of any detail, or answer questions about the unit's history and condition.
