EXCLUSICE PATENTED "C" QROMATICA* flute (chromatic tambin, or chromatic Fula flute)
Length: 25 and 3/4 inches
The qromatica is a patented modification of the traditional Fula flute (or tambin) from Guinea.
This flute was made in 2026 by inventor Sylvain Leroux, who, since 2002, has made Fula flutes that are being played by fine musicians around the world. It is made from rattan, the traditional Guinean flute material (that is endangered and increasingly difficult to procure), calabash, cowrie shells, and decorated with African cloth and thread. It will be delivered in sturdy and elegant African cloth sleeve, with fingerings charts and care instructions.
A sound sample of this flute is available upon request.
"By adding three new, carefully placed finger holes to the traditional instrument, Sylvain Leroux has rendered a unique and age-old instrument capable of virtuosic playing. Its voice can now be applied to every musical style from jazz to classical composition. Until now the tambin has been limited to basic modal scales, although its exquisitely simple construction has promoted the development of highly complex performance fundamentals. Leroux's qromatica retains all the powerful vocal/flute effects of its parent instrument but with new chromatic possibilities."
—Howard Mandel, President of the Jazz Journalists Association
*All qromaticas can play in all keys. However, they can be made in different lengths from ones with a low note of B to ones with a low note of D.
