This is not just a vintage synthesizer. It is a piece of British rock history.

This Minimoog Model D was purchased by Mark Kelly, keyboard player of Marillion, in 1983 and used as his primary lead synthesiser on every Marillion album from Fugazi (1984) through the 2000s. It can be seen and heard on some of the most celebrated progressive rock albums of its era, including Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws, Season's End, Holidays in Eden, Brave and Afraid of Sunlight.

Provenance The instrument's history is extensively documented in photographs and video footage from Marillion's recording sessions and live performances. A signed letter from Mark Kelly personally confirming the provenance will accompany the sale.

Modifications and History Over its working life this Minimoog was modified and maintained to professional touring standard:

  • The wood cabinet was refinished in black (from original teak) around 1991
  • A MIDI input was retrofitted by John Price of Kenton Electronics — one of the most respected names in vintage synth modification
  • The modulation wheel was replaced in the 1990s
  • The instrument was professionally serviced in 2019, during which some internal trimmer potentiometers were replaced.

The MIDI retrofit is working but would benefit from calibration.

Condition This synthesizer is fully functional. As a genuine touring instrument used across Europe and beyond, this Minimoog carries the cosmetic wear of a working life in music. Its character is authentic and it has not been cosmetically restored.
