The Nobels Stereo Pak from 1990 is a portable headphone amplifier for guitarists that was manufactured in Korea and is a versatile practice and recording tool. The device has a compact, robust housing (partly made of aluminum) and was supplied with a belt clip, typical of the 80s/90s aesthetic

Sound engine:

Channel options: Various amp simulations (clean to distortion) and an integrated 440Hz vocal tone.

Effects:

Analog stereo chorus for wide, spacious sound.

Ambient delay (2-24 ms) that simulates room reflections - ideal for practicing without a tape.

Interconnect system:

Enables interaction with other musicians (e.g. bassists, drum machines) or devices such as tape recorders via stereo inputs/outputs. This was an innovative feature for synchronized practicing or recording.

Power supply:

Powered by either 8 AA batteries or a mains adapter (not included), making it suitable for use both at home and on the road.

Special features & historical context

Cooperation with Fender:

The Stereo Pak was sold in the USA under the Fender brand, but remained technically identical to the Nobels original.

Comparison to the Rockman:

The device was advertised as a European alternative to the Scholz Rockman, but without its characteristic echo.

Sound character:

Typical for the 80s/90s: DI-like, clear sounds with a slight hiss, but high practicality. The chorus produced the “LA studio sound” of the era.

Accessories & collector's value

Original packaging: Some examples were supplied with a pink box and Nobels-branded headphones - a rarity today.

Cult status: Due to its rarity (especially under the Nobels label), the Stereo Pak is sought after by collectors.

Conclusion: The Stereo Pak was an innovative practice tool of its time, which stood out due to its interconnect system and analog stereo sound. Today, it is a coveted vintage piece for fans of retro guitar technology.
