  • Wide-neck Predator conversion
(Easy brick layer and farmer fingering for big working hands)

I do a lot of these conversions of Predators from seven string to wide six, but mostly I use the fixed TOM bridge type.

(I have just fitted a set of Fender nines, but most photos show it still with the salvage set I fitted to do the initial work and set up)

This guitar and all my others are also for sale on Ebay.
These Floyd Rose variants take a lot more time and work for me to convert into being a wide six string hard tail, but the TOM bridge type are turning up less often so I have done quite a few now.
This is now a fixed bridge for tuning stability and better string sustain.
The Peavey Predator feels to me wider than other seven stringers I convert, but the nut width is the same (48mm) and the TOM bridge is standard seven string width of 62,5mm E to E... the difference is in that the neck has a more generous span beyond the outer strings... and being slim in depth makes it feel even wider.
The strings you see in my photos are just a salvage set I fitted for the building and set up stage... the light was still good when I finished the work today so I photographed it as it was. They will be snipped off and replaced with new Fender nines in the next few days.
When I reduce the seven tuners to six it is too easy and obvious to go for three a side head like with a Les Paul, and in fact I have come to prefer the four in a row on the top edge and two below; if however you want to buy the guitar and tell me before I re string it, then I can make it three a side for you if you like that more?
A lovely set up job on this one as the Peavey heel end truss rod seems a reliable feature and so easy to access. There were a few frets needed settling down right at the top, but I was playing it on a crazily low action for cutting the string grooves without make huge cock-ups!
I removed the locking nut and fitted a bone nut which is quite slow to cut when I drop the string grooves for super-light chord holding, but it is nice stuff and will probably outlive the guitar and it's owner!
I will go through bridge, nut, and truss rod again when I fit the new strings.
You will notice I kept the Peavey humbucker at the bridge to suit well if you like shredding or Gary Moore stuff, but at the neck end I went for a clearer Fender tone from a single coil hotrail pickup... the two in conjunction give a really useful tone of multi harmonics.
I re set the neck angle a few degrees and have fitted a pair of Fender strat knobs which I like better than the black satin knurled ally ones.
Message me about anything that comes to mind? Thanks for reading through, Mark D Phillips....... PCGC
