The Ensoniq VFX, released in 1989, is a powerful 62-note digital synthesizer featuring velocity and aftertouch, known for its unique blend of Transwave Wavetable Synthesis, Sample Playback, and Subtractive Synthesis. This rare combination makes it one of the most expressive and dynamic synthesizers of its era.

Unlike other wavetable synths like the Waldorf Microwave or PPG Wave, the VFX allows for modulation of wavetables in various ways, creating animated and evolving textures. Its 16-bit waveforms sampled at approximately 39 kHz provide a high level of sound fidelity, covering classic instruments such as pianos, basses, guitars, and strings, alongside Ensoniq’s signature lush digital tones.

The sound engine is incredibly deep, with six oscillators per voice, enabling complex layered and detuned sounds. It also features a full matrix modulation system, allowing advanced routing of parameters for expressive control. One of its standout features is its performance mode, where you can stack up to three different patches on the fly, resulting in an immensely deep and powerful sound—a feature that remains intuitive and ahead of its time.

This Ensoniq VFX is in great condition, fully functional and meticulously maintained. It has undergone a full overhaul to correct the well-known issue with keyboard connectors, which have been replaced, ensuring long-term reliability. Additionally, the backup battery has been replaced to ensure stable memory retention.

The keyboard mechanism, display, buttons, and aftertouch response have been tested and work flawlessly. The sound engine operates perfectly, delivering the signature Ensoniq richness and depth.
