The PB-05 from Optogate is an automatic microphone switch with an optical distance sensor.
The device is simply plugged between microphone and cable.

On the front side is an active infrared sensor. This sensor "detects" when someone is in front of the microphone and switches the microphone on without any switching noise. The microphone is automatically switched off when no one is in front of the microphone. A red status LED indicates the operating status of the Optogate. The PB-05 works with 48V phantom power. Condenser microphones can also be used with the PB-05 without problems. The phantom power is forwarded to the microphone. It eliminates unwanted background noise from instruments into unused microphones. The clarity and dynamic range of the useful signal is significantly increased by reduced phase cancellation and overlapping of other microphones. The distance range of the PB-05, in which the sensor governs, is adjustable between 15-120cm. When activated, the microphone is switched on in less than 0.2 seconds and when leaving the range, it is muted again after about 1 second.
