1959 Silvertone 1303—the Sears catalog version of the Danelectro U2. It’s a benchmark model, very similar to the DC2 popularized by Jimmy Page—naturally!
Danelectros from the 1950s are truly compelling; they feature that now-legendary formula: a highly comfortable neck, a hollow body, dual "lipstick" pickups, a lightweight build, and an inimitable sonic character.
This particular instrument is exceptionally well-preserved and has been fully set up and serviced in our workshop. The neck is perfectly straight, fast, and easy to play, with a low string action—a rarity for these models! While slide playing is certainly an option, it is currently set up for a low, supple action, ideal for fingerstyle playing. Versatility is key!
The frets have been leveled and polished and are in excellent condition (see photos); the playing experience is fluid and fast. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is also beautiful and offers a fantastic feel under the fingers.
The two lipstick pickups deliver a tone that is both precise and warm—offering gorgeous clean sounds and organic crunch, perfect for rock 'n' roll, indie rock, or garage blues.
A rare model that is perfectly playable. I’ve included a video to give you an idea of its sound, but it’s up to you to make it sing exactly the way you envision!
