About this listing
Unlike many Les Paul Standards of this time period, this guitar has a non-sandwich one piece mahogany body and a two-piece top. It is very rare to find a Les Paul with a two-piece top in the Norlin era since almost all of them had a three-piece top. The top is perfectly bookmatched and looks gorgeous. It also comes with the original paperwork and a Gibson Chainsaw case Gen 3 in great condition (Slash has one like this!). All of this makes this guitar a collector’s item.In addition, it features a 'Nihon' sticker on the back of the headstock which means it was produced specifically for the Japanese export and for early 80's it means a much better quality control in comparison to the general Norlin-era Gibsons. At the heart of this Standard is the pair of original Tim Shaw PAF humbuckers, which represent Gibson's first (and arguably most successful) attempt at recreating the magic of their late '50s humbucker design. Offered for only a few short years in the '80s, the Shaws are designed with unoriented, rough cast Alnico V magnets, plastic spacers, and poly-coated wire, achieving the harmonic complexity, power, and tonal clarity of the original PAF. The Shaws have a sweet, singing quality, with rich harmonic content and a very dynamic sound. The frets are the original ones and therefore on the low side, so probably it will need a refretting but that is left for the decision of the new owner.
