Part of SPL’s discontinued modular Analog Elemental Series of specialized processing tools, the Model 1293 delivers both De-Esser processing and DynaMaxx dynamics in a convenient 1U rackmount format. This unit has been well cared for during my ownership, used exclusively in a smoke-free studio, and shows very minimal cosmetic wear.

SHORT SUMMARY

  • Dual-module analog processor in a compact 1U rack format.
  • Combines Dual-Band De-Esser and DynaMaxx for vocal and dynamics control.
  • High-quality SPL analog circuitry for clean, musical sound.
  • Balanced XLR I/O for easy integration into professional studios.
  • Part of SPL’s modular Analog Elemental Series, designed for flexible workflows.

SPL’s Analog Elemental Series was conceived as a compact, modular line of professional analog processors that brings together SPL’s most respected preamps and effect tools into a flexible 1U, 19-inch rack format. By combining a selection of carefully developed or adapted modules — from high-quality preamps to dynamics and tonal processors — into paired units, the series lets engineers and producers tailor front-end and signal shaping combinations to specific recording or mixing needs without the complexity of larger modular systems. The idea was to offer elemental building blocks of SPL’s classic analog circuitry with precision, musicality, and usability in configurations suited to both studio and live applications, satisfying longstanding customer demand for both excellent preamplification and versatile processing in a compact form.

The Dual-Band De-Esser is a specialized analog sibilance processor designed to gently and transparently tame harsh “s” sounds in vocals or other sources without harming the natural tone. Unlike typical compressor-based de-essing, it uses two independent frequency bands — a low and a high band — with selectable male/female voicing for the low band, letting you target sibilant energy precisely where it occurs and adjust the amount of reduction separately for each band. Operating on a phase-cancellation principle, it automatically focuses only on the offending frequencies and leaves surrounding audio untouched, resulting in smooth, musical de-essing that’s easy to dial in and integrates well with recording and mixing workflows.

DynaMaxx is a distinctive analog dynamics processor that goes beyond a typical compressor by combining adaptive, musical compression with creative flexibility in a simple, two-control design. It automatically adjusts attack and release times to suit the incoming signal, giving smooth and transparent dynamic control, and even includes a “de-compression” mode to expand the dynamics of previously over-compressed material — useful for revitalizing flat tracks or shaping creative effects. The circuitry uses dual THAT 2181 VCAs for enhanced transparency and low distortion, meaning it can tame bass and complex stereo material without common compression artifacts.
