The UHER M 531 is a compact West German dynamic microphone with a wonderfully straightforward design: a rectangular body almost completely surrounded by its perforated metal grille.

Rather than separating the capsule into a conventional microphone head, UHER essentially made the grille itself the visual body of the microphone. A dark plastic frame supports the metal structure from behind, while the small UHER badge and M/S switch are among the few details interrupting the otherwise extremely clean front and rear surfaces.

The result is simple, functional and immediately recognizable as a piece of German audio equipment from its period.

The M 531 sits comfortably between basic consumer microphones and UHER's more elaborate professional equipment. It is best understood as a high-quality general-purpose microphone: uncomplicated, robust and designed to work with a wide variety of sources.

BUILD & DESIGN

The construction of the M 531 is unusually clean.

A large perforated metal grille extends almost edge to edge, wrapping around the microphone and protecting the dynamic capsule inside. The main structural elements are provided by the darker side and rear sections of the housing.

Unlike the closely related UHER M 615, the M 531 does not incorporate retractable legs for use as its own table microphone.

Instead, the M 531 is intended to be mounted directly on a microphone stand, with a threaded mounting point integrated into the bottom of the housing.

This gives the M 531 a particularly uncluttered appearance and makes it a very compact conventional stand microphone.

M / S FILTER

An integrated M / S switch provides two different response settings.

The switch remains fully functional on this example and gives the microphone a useful second tonal option without requiring any external electronics.

It is a small feature, but very characteristic of microphones intended to serve several recording and speech applications rather than one highly specialized purpose.

SOUND

The M 531 is a surprisingly pleasant and balanced vintage dynamic microphone.

There is no single exaggerated characteristic dominating its sound. Instead, it provides a fairly even, natural midrange with useful body and a controlled vintage bandwidth.

It does not have the extended extremes of a modern studio microphone, but within its operating range the presentation is coherent and easy to use.

That makes the M 531 a genuine all-rounder.

Speech and vocals work naturally, while guitar, amplifiers, percussion and other midrange instruments can benefit from its slightly restricted vintage presentation without becoming excessively colored.

The working M/S filter provides an additional way of adapting that character to the source.

THIS EXAMPLE

This particular M 531 retains its original dynamic capsule and working M/S filter.

The original connection has been adapted to XLR, allowing the microphone to be connected directly to modern recording equipment while retaining the original microphone and cable assembly.

The housing and large metal grille remain in particularly attractive vintage condition, with the characteristic UHER badge still present.

THE PRACTICAL ALL-ROUNDER

The UHER M 531 does not rely on an exotic transducer or an extreme sonic characteristic to make it interesting.

Its appeal is its simplicity.

A good dynamic capsule, useful filtering, robust construction, straightforward stand mounting and an unusually clean rectangular design come together in a microphone that can simply be put in front of a source and used.

It is an attractive example of UHER's practical approach to audio equipment — and a very usable vintage dynamic for anyone looking for classic German character without an overly specialized sound.
