All-Mahogany Warmth, Ready to Play Again

Some guitars just have a voice that draws you in — and the Yamaha FG850 is one of them. Built around a solid mahogany top with mahogany back and sides, this dreadnought has that thick, present midrange character that mahogany is known for: woody, warm, and full without being muddy. Whether you're strumming chords around the house or working through originals, it delivers a sound that feels bigger than its price suggests.

This Yamaha FG850 has a GigBag Included, Condition: Very Good Small dents on side and by binding.

The FG850 is part of Yamaha's long-running FG 800 Series — a line with a serious reputation for delivering solid construction and reliable playability at an approachable price. This particular example is a used unit in Very Good condition, with small dents on the side and by the binding noted by our staff. It still plays and sounds great, and at a used price, it's a lot of guitar for the money.

Solid Mahogany Top with Scalloped Bracing

The FG850's solid mahogany top is the centerpiece of its tone. Where spruce tops tend to emphasize clarity and sparkle, mahogany leans into warmth and sustain — giving strummed chords a rich, enveloping quality and fingerpicked lines a rounded, woody feel. Yamaha pairs it with a newly developed scalloped bracing pattern, which reinforces the top while allowing it to move more freely, boosting projection and low-to-mid response.

The result is a guitar that sounds notably fuller in the lower midrange — useful if you're playing singer-songwriter material, blues, or anything that benefits from a warmer tonal foundation. Players often find this kind of voice cuts through nicely in a mix without dominating the high end.

A Neck That Stays Out of Your Way

The FG850's Nato neck is finished in a comfortable, standard profile that suits a wide range of playing styles. Up top, a rosewood fingerboard with a 400mm radius (about 15.75") keeps chord voicings and single-note runs feeling natural. The 25-9/16" scale length and 1-11/16" nut width hit a familiar sweet spot — close enough to a standard long-scale feel that it won't surprise players moving from other full-size dreadnoughts.

Twenty frets, die-cast chrome tuners, and a rosewood bridge round out a package that's built to stay in tune and stay playable. Urea nut and saddle are serviceable, and a bone replacement is always an easy upgrade down the road if you want to squeeze a little more tone from it.

The Look

The FG850 wears a gloss natural finish that lets the mahogany's grain show through cleanly. Cream binding frames the body nicely, and an abalone soundhole inlay adds a touch of detail that keeps the aesthetic from feeling plain. The tortoiseshell pickguard is a classic touch on a guitar this style. It's a traditional, handsome instrument — nothing flashy, just well-proportioned.
