This banjo is in pretty nice shape. It needs a deep clean around the lugs.

The chip case is in pretty not so great shape. It still works as a case but it is on it's last leg.

Silvertone long neck banjos were budget-friendly 5-string instruments manufactured during the 1950s and 1960s by companies like Kay or Harmony and sold through the Sears Catalog. Featuring a 25-fret extra-long scale designed to be tuned down to Open E, they let folk musicians emulate Pete Seeger and sing in lower vocal keys.

History and Manufacturing

• Sears Brand: Silvertone was a house brand for Sears, Roebuck and Co., sourced from major US budget instrument factories.
• Builder Identity: Most vintage long neck and standard 5-string Silvertone banjos from this era were built by Kay Musical Instrument Company or Harmony Company.
• Market Position: These were entry-level, student-grade instruments originally retailing for around $35 to $50 in the 1960s.

• Scale Length: Features an extended 25-fret neck (roughly a 32-inch scale) instead of the standard 22 frets.
• Tuning: Designed to be pitched down 3 half-steps to Open E (E-B-E-G#-B). Putting a capo on the 3rd fret brings it back to standard G tuning.
• Materials: Typically built with laminated or ply rims, painted or poplin necks, and composite or simple wooden rims.
