What to Consider When Choosing Drum Sticks
There is no one-size-fits-all choice for drum sticks—what you like and what works with your playing will vary from person to person. Below, we've listed some things to consider before choosing the right sticks for you.
Size: Drum sticks come in sizes like 5A, 7A, 2B, and so one, which indicates information about the stick's shoulder taper in relation to its circumference and length. One convention to remember is that the higher the number, the smaller the stick's circumference. You should also remember that the letter was originally used to signal what style of playing the stick was intended to be used for—"B" for band, "A" for orchestra, "S" for street marching bands or parades—with each style of stick tapering differently and being weighted differently for different kinds of control.
Weight: Speaking of weight, regardless of what sized sticks you go with, know that they're matched in pairs based on their mass—so be sure to choose sticks that weigh roughly the same amount if you're not already using a matched pair. Otherwise, hickory and maple are both common woods used to make drum sticks, with the former often being heavier than the latter.
Grain and Straightness: You should always buy your sticks brand-new, as the few dollars you'd save on used sticks wouldn't be worth the miles already put into them. And with most brands, quality assurance is super high and you won't find these sorts of issues with brand-new sticks. But there are a few things to look out for when buying new sticks. First, they should be perfectly straight and not wobble when rolled across a flat surface. Secondly, the grain should run parallel to the length of the stick; angled grain usually indicates a stick that will soon break.
