Ace 4 Long and Short Scale 

The Bootlegger Ace Bass was the first bass I received from Bootlegger Guitar. I found it to be well made and surprised at the finish from the factory. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to guitars. I grew up mainly on Fender and Gibson-style guitars, so needless to say, I was not a fan ofheadless guitars.

I had sat in on a gig before in the 80s for a song with a band, and the bass player had one of the popular headless basses of the time. I hated it. It felt so unnatural…like I was falling off a cliff in the lower positions. However, fast forward to 2018, and I tried the Ace, and I really was caught off guard by how well it played.  The pickups, Boohung a Korean brand, were full and articulate, and very noise-free. 

The shark fin ( kind of ) design sat well on my knee when seated, and with the strap and standing balanced well. The strap set up was not ideal for me, so we ( Bootlegger ) designed the strap extender. It draws the bass into my body more. It’s removable so it’s available as needed. 

The strap extender is an option for those who have a larger body or shorter arms. Originally a Warwick part for the Knobby Bass line. 

Our independent monorail bridge tuners are housed in aircraft-grade aluminum, and with our independent bell brass single-string locks, the strings are connected to the wood individually. These features both reduce the sympathetic vibrations that can cause unwanted ringing from other strings. This provides a nice wood tone. 

I am very happy with the sound and playability of the Ace, and because of its smaller footprint, it travels as a backup or main bass to every gig with me. At our price point, the Ace Bass is worth considering. A compact, lightweight, professional bass.
