Vox used the term "Super" to identify amplifiers that had a separate head and speaker cabinet. The term "Twin" indicated the number of speakers in the amplifier. Vox introduced the first version of the AC-30 "Super Twin" with a separate head and 2x12" speaker enclosure in 1961.

When introduced in 1961, the AC-30 Super Twin was offered by Vox primarily as a bass guitar amp. Vox felt that separating the head from the speaker cabinet would improve dependability over the combo version of the amp by isolating the chassis from the direct vibrations emanating from the speakers.

Vox product catalog descriptions from the early to mid 1960's indicated that Super Twin speaker cabinets normally had closed backs, or were "pressurized," using Vox marketing speak. However, not all AC-30 Super Twin speaker cabinets had closed backs. For guitarists, the open-backed  version (which this one is) is the most desirable version. It has a little less low-end and a more pronounced mid-range. Two 8 ohm Celestion/Vox 12" alnico speakers, wired in series to 16 ohms, power the cabinet.

Vox ramped up the appeal of the AC-30 Super Twin amp series in 1965 by installing Top Boost circuitry in the main control panel (which was a common after-market mod beforehand), incorporating a reverb circuit and converting the head cabinet to a trapezoidal, or "slant sided" shape. This new amp was known as the AC-30 "Super Reverb Twin" or "SRT".

This model is almost fully original apart from a few new caps. The reverb has been removed and the serial number plate moved to cover the hole formerly occupied by the controls on the back panel, this is also a 'common' modification, probably to decrease the amps responsiveness to feedback. The tremolo and vibrato circuit has also been removed, although the channel still functions.

Where this amp really shines, is in the 'normal' channel. It's loud, for sure, and it has a gorgeous natural overdrive when cranked past the 6 or 7 mark. The top-boost function works wonderfully and ensures you have that Vox 'bite' most of you are looking for. It's direct yet incredibly dynamic and lively, and even on low volumes the cleans are luscious and powerful.

This is perhaps the rarest mid-’60s AC30 model, definitely the most deluxe version, with a separate cabinet and an amp head featuring factory Top Boost. Both Vox enthusiasts and tone fanatics will rejoice, as this is an incredible sounding exotic amplifier.
