This is the Dunlop / MXR EP101 Echoplex Preamp, a compact pedal version of the legendary EP-3 Echoplex preamp section. It is not a delay pedal; it is a preamp / boost / tone-conditioning pedal designed to add the tonal character associated with the original Echoplex EP-3 front end.
The pedal has a simple one-knob layout: the Gain control adjusts how much gain is added to the signal. At lower settings it can work as an always-on tone enhancer, adding presence, clarity, and subtle warmth. At higher settings it can act as a boost and add light overdrive clipping. Dunlop’s manual states that position 5 is approximately unity gain, clockwise increases gain up to +11 dB, and higher settings can produce light overdrive clipping.
The EP101 can be placed in different parts of the signal chain depending on use. At the beginning of the chain it can work as a true preamp or lead boost. After drive pedals it can add extra harmonic detail and signal shaping. At the end of the chain it can sweeten the full pedalboard signal and act as a buffer-like tone conditioner, as suggested in Dunlop’s manual.
