The Roland U8 arrives at a time when recording into a computer feels increasingly non-tactile—using a mouse for "tape deck" operations and punch-ins just doesn’t feel intuitive. The U8 consolidates all the essential outboard gear for hard-drive recording into one compact unit, featuring:
- 20-bit A/D and D/A converters
- Line, mic, and guitar-level inputs
- Digital outputs for DAT or CD-R
- Built-in MIDI interface
- 8-track mixer and transport controls
- Mixing capabilities for up to 8 digital audio tracks and 16 MIDI channels
- 100 built-in digital effects
Roland also includes Virtual Sound Canvas, a software-based synth, but the real fun begins when paired with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 running on a PC, with the U8 serving as the front-end controller. It connects effortlessly to your computer via a simple USB cable, with no additional hardware required to get started.
