Over the past decade, the modular synth community has produced plenty of odds and ends—while some module-makers keep their designs simple and minimal, others use the format to craft colorful and singular modern art objects.
The POLYTIK collection—a rare battery-powered lot of four hybrid analog/digital modules—is no exception. Created by Jack Featherstone and John Richards of Dirty Electronics in collaboration with Artists & Engineers, only five sets of these color-coded devices were produced.
When paired together, these units are capable of unlimited sound design potential, from abstract rhythmic sequences to thick walls of noise and drones.
The full set contains a blue sequencer, programmer, and mixer loaded with thirty sequences; a black voltage-controlled feedback and oscillator unit; a red VCO and VCF; and a yellow noise generator with patchable feedback networks and its own VCF. The sequences also contain interviews and comments embedded in the code from electronic musicians including Simian Mobile Disco's Jas Shaw and SND's Mark Fell.
