I am offering a Fender Custom Shop '64 Jazz Bass Lake Placid Blue Heavy Relic from 2014, a crafted in the Fender Custom Shop in Corona, California (USA), luxury reissue model of a 1964 Fender Jazz Bass as a 4-string version with selected alder body (4.27kg total weight), bolt-on quartersawn maple neck with '60s JB “U” neck profile and 38.1mm nut width, fine “AAA” rosewood fingerboard with Micarta white dot inlays, two wire-hot Fender Custom Shop Vintage Jazz Bass Relic singlecoil pickups, long 864mm scale length, aged Fender Vintage Open Gear bass tuners, and 4-piece Fender Vintage Jazz Bass bridge in an elaborately designed Lake Placid Blue Heavy Relic high-gloss finish with 4-ply tortoise pickguard and matching headstock in mint condition, including Fender Brown Tolex luxury case, all manufacturer's papers, and professional setup with 45-105 Fender strings.
The Precision Bass was an instant hit when it was introduced in 1951, and Leo Fender initially saw no need to expand his bass range. It was Leo Fender's employee Don Randall who urged Leo to come up with a new design to complement the range. The Jazz Bass first appeared in the Fender price list in July 1960 with a price tag of $279.50. Its name and body design were modeled on the Jazzmaster electric guitar. The neck, which was slimmer than that of the P-Bass, was intended to entice even more double bass players to switch, thanks to its comfortable playability.
This detailed reissue of an early 1964 J-Bass from the Fender Custom Shop from 2014 combines period-correct specs with an extremely authentic Heavy Relic Lake Placid Blue Nitro finish, including a matching painted headstock, giving the instrument an incredible '60s vintage vibe.
A selected two-piece alder body provides excellent acoustic resonance that can be felt in the pit of your stomach, as well as a good weight of 4.27kg, which, together with the gentle body contours, allows for comfortable handling. Combined with the bolt-on quartersawn maple neck and the richly grained “AAA” rosewood fingerboard, the result is the characteristic warm, overtone-rich Fender Jazz Bass tone that has enchanted generations of bassists for decades.
The acoustic sound characteristics are transferred to the amp: the sustain is tremendous, and the two Fender CS Vintage Jazz Bass Relic singlecoils, together with the classic passive electronics, deliver strikingly wiry sounds that suit almost any playing technique in almost any musical genre. The bass successfully produces warm, bluesy vintage sounds, groovy funk basslines, and powerful modern rock sounds with higher output, making it an absolute all-rounder.
A sound sample of a similar model (only in black finish and without matching headstock) can be found above at the end of the photo gallery.
The factory-ground back of the neck, the rounded fretboard edges, and the typical '60s JB “U” neck profile not only provide the best playing conditions for the fretting hand, but also an extremely high-quality playing feel thanks to the direct contact with the wood. The heavily aged Fender vintage hardware gives the instrument an authentic style.
