Brought to us by Dave Derr of Distressor acclaim. Here we have EMPIRICAL LABS' brilliant DERRESSER, primarily functioning as a high-performance de-esser to tame harsh sibilance in vocals and instruments. The DERRESSER employs a unique level-insensitive detection method that compares high-frequency content to low-frequency content, allowing it to reduce treble without being affected by overall signal level changes.
Beyond de-essing, the unit offers four distinct modes of operation to provide versatile audio shaping:
- DS Mode: The standard de-esser function that uses a Voltage Controlled Amp (VCA) to dynamically turn down harsh high frequencies in a musical manner, ideal for correcting overly bright singers or aggressive EQ settings.
- HF Limit Mode: Acts as a high-frequency compressor or soft knee limiter that smooths out general high-frequency spikes and edges on various sources while preserving the "air" of the mix.
- Highpass Filter: When using the "Listen" function, the device serves as a high-quality high-pass filter, allowing the user to hear only the high frequencies being controlled by the dynamic circuits.
- Lowpass Filter: Similarly, this mode allows the user to hear the low frequencies that are not affected by the dynamic processing, functioning as a 12 dB per octave low-pass filter.
The DERRESSER is built with glitch-free, distortion-free VCA technology and is suitable for all 500 series racks.
