Introduced in 1967, the Neumann U 87 Ai has shaped the sound of countless hit records and remains the gold standard by which other microphones are measured. What sets the U 87 Ai apart is its unique combination of linearity and character. Although its on-axis frequency response is remarkably flat, it does exert certain charisma — it just sounds right. This makes the U 87 Ai both versatile and instantly recognizable. The "mt" designation refers to its elegant matte black finish — sonically identical to the classic nickel version. This Studio Set includes the manufacturer's proprietary EA 87 shock mount and a premium wooden case.

Key elements of its design:

• K870/67 Dual-Diaphragm Capsule The U 87 Ai uses the same dual-diaphragm condenser capsule design as its predecessor, the legendary U 67 of the early 1960s. The capsule is handcrafted in Germany in a state-of-the-art clean room with monitored dust levels under 100 particles per cubic foot — conditions suitable for semiconductor and medical device production. The layer of gold applied to the diaphragm is just 0.03 microns thick, equivalent to 208 atoms of gold.
• Three Switchable Polar Patterns The U 87 Ai is equipped with a large dual-diaphragm capsule offering three directional patterns: omnidirectional, cardioid, and figure-8, selectable with a switch below the head grille. A window above the switch shows the symbol of the selected characteristic, and the dual-diaphragm capsule is elastically mounted and protected by a large headgrille.
• FET Circuit with Transformer-Balanced Output The head amplifier is based on the same design principles as the tube-driven U 67, realized by means of a unique FET circuit with a minimal signal path and a transformer-balanced output, ensuring maximum signal integrity and high common mode rejection. The modern circuitry increases the mic's operational headroom by reducing the resistance through which the capsule bias voltage is supplied, delivering 10 dB higher sensitivity and a 3 dB improvement in signal-to-noise ratio over the original U 87.
• Switchable –10 dB Pad & Low-Cut Filter Three switches on the capsule head allow the user to select the three directional characteristics, engage a low-frequency roll-off, and activate a 10 dB pre-attenuation. The pad allows the U 87 Ai to capture SPLs up to 127 dB without distortion, while the low-cut filter controls build-up of low-frequency content and compensates for the proximity effect.
• EA 87 Elastic Shock Mount & Wooden Case The Studio Set includes the proprietary EA 87 shock mount to reduce handling noise to a professional level, as well as a high-end wooden case for safe storage and transport.
