The JoMoX Alpha Base MkII is an 11‑instrument hybrid drum machine and analog drum synthesizer that combines JoMoX’s legendary discrete analog circuits with powerful digital sampling and FM synthesis for a complete modern drum workstation. It delivers a huge, physical low end and highly sculptable percussion thanks to its true analog kick and MBrane voices, hybrid sample‑plus‑filter cymbal and percussion channels, two flexible sample instruments, and a six‑voice 4‑operator FM synth for melodic and percussive content.

Key elements of its design:

  • Eleven dedicated drum and synth instruments
The Alpha Base MkII features 11 instruments: analog Kick Drum, analog MBrane, Closed HiHat, Open HiHat, Clap, Rim Shot, Crash, Ride, X Sample 1, X Sample 2, and a 4‑operator FM Synth with up to 6 voices. The kick is a full‑range discrete analog circuit famous for extremely powerful bass, while the MBrane voice uses two coupleable F‑OSC oscillators to create complex analog snares, toms, basses and metallic percussion from 16 Hz up to 20 kHz.
  • Hybrid and sample-based architecture
The hi‑hat, clap, rim shot, crash, and ride channels combine sample playback with true analog VCAs and filters, giving digital flexibility with analog dynamics and tone shaping. Two dedicated X Sample instruments are fully sample‑based, with external stereo sampling input and pure digital playback that can be freely pitched, looped, and modulated.
  • Sampling engine and memory
The internal flash memory holds up to 500 mono samples at 16‑bit / 48 kHz, organized into fixed slots accessible per instrument via the sample‑select parameter. Samples can be loaded from an SD card, copied into flash, pitched across a wide range, looped, and edited for start and end points, with modulation targets including pitch, filter cutoff, and volume via per‑channel LFOs.
  • Per-voice modulation, effects, and stereo panning
Every instrument has its own LFO (the MBrane has two) with 64 available waveforms, assignable to pitch, VCA level, and filter cutoff for detailed motion per sound. Global effects include delay and reverb with per‑instrument sends, which can also be inserted into the analog signal paths of channels like closed/open hats, clap, rim, and ride, plus stereo VCA panning for all instruments to build wide, animated drum mixes.
  • Advanced step sequencer and performance tools
The built‑in 11‑track step sequencer offers up to 64 steps per pattern (four 16‑step bars) with a 16‑step running LED interface for immediate hands‑on programming. Features such as parameter locks per step, Shuffle, Roll, Flam, Pattern Chain, Copy/Paste, and polyrhythmic possibilities give deep control over groove and variation for live performance and studio composition.

Connectivity, I/O, and construction
The Alpha Base MkII provides 8 balanced individual outputs, a balanced stereo mix out, stereo hi‑Z inputs for sampling, FX or sidechain (suitable for guitar/bass or up to +20 dBu line level), headphones output, MIDI In/Out/Thru, USB MIDI, and an SD card slot. All outputs can deliver up to around +20 dBu balanced, powered by an internal ±15 V analog supply for high headroom, and the unit is housed in a robust metal chassis with wooden side cheeks, 18 endless encoders, analog volume pots for input/phones/mix, an OLED display (256 × 64 px), and dimensions of about 41 × 24 × 8 cm at roughly 3.3 kg.
