Airline Guitars ’59 Coronado DLX

Inspired by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys

Inspired by the vintage Supro Coronado and Martinique

The Airline '59 Coronado is a tribute to the Supro Coronado model used by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. It retains the deco swagger of the original Supro Martinique and Coronado guitars, while delivering the reliability of an axe fresh off the showroom floor. With interest in vintage Supro Guitars shooting through the roof (thanks in no small part to artists like The Black Keys and Jack White), this Airline ’59 Coronado Reissue may be the closest thing you’ll find to a playable vintage piece - Especially if you’re on a working musician’s budget.

Retaining the sharp lines and soft curves of the original Coronado, the Airline reissue looks sexy and has been upgraded for tone and functionality. Unlike the clunky and unreliable hardware used on the vintage Supros, this Airline ’59 Coronado features Wilkinson tuning pegs and a TonePros roller bridge that works great in tandem with the Bigsby tremolo. The ’59 Coronado also includes traditional appointments like rubber body binding and a zero fret neck.

The original vintage guitars were made of “Res-O-Glas” (a nickname for fiberglass coined by Valco/Supro) and naysayers may be quick to take issue with the tone chambered Mahogany body material used here. Res-O-Glas does have a very distinct sound, however, it can be sterile, less stable for tuning, and prone to cracking. The chambered Mahogany is warmer and richer, like a traditional chambered solidbody electric guitar, and sounds great with the Alnico Hot-10 pickups. It is also more stable and ages well.

Overall, the Airline Guitars ’59 Coronado is a fantastic guitar with a voice all its own and a sweet-looking body that’s a dead ringer for those early Supros. This is one of those guitars that makes the union of vintage and modern seem like a very, very appealing mix.
