The Hermansson Amplification Dual Rectifier Mod, designed by Henric Hermansson in Sweden, is a complete custom overhaul. This modification transforms the naturally loose, flubby, and compressed character of a standard Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier into an ultra-tight, lightning-fast, fully tube-driven high-gain metal machine.
Rather than a basic replacement of individual components, Hermansson completely rebuilds the preamp circuit. In doing so, he implements his signature 4-gain-stage topology (and sometimes even a 5-gain-stage layout, depending on the model). This mod eliminates all the characteristic "fizz" (harsh high end) and muddy low end of the stock amplifier, completely changing its tonal DNA.
Key Tonal Characteristics
Extreme Tightness: The amp loses its loose, flubby Rectifier character, gaining an immediate, aggressive string response and note separation—perfect for complex, modern metal rhythms.
No Boost Pedal Required: A standard Rectifier usually requires an overdrive pedal (such as an Ibanez TS9) to tighten up the low end. The Hermansson mod makes this unnecessary, delivering a razor-sharp attack directly from the guitar.
Clear Midrange Focus: It reshapes the upper-midrange structure into a highly articulate, cutting frequency profile.
Pure Tube Distortion: The massive gain structure relies entirely on an all-tube circuit, featuring strictly tubes and zero clipping diodes or transistors in the signal path.
Custom Tone-Shaping Controls and Features
Hermansson installs a series of precision switches and potentiometers directly into the chassis:
Tightness Control: A dedicated pot that smoothly transitions from a standard response to an absolute, immediate attack.
3-Way Preshape Switch: A high-pass filter applied before the distortion stage to either cut or emphasize incoming low frequencies.
3-Way Bright Switch: Adjusts high frequencies after the distortion stage, targeting frequencies well above standard presence controls.
3-Way Mid-Boost / Gain Boost Switch: Offers a sharp notch-filter setting before distortion or a full-range pure gain boost.
3-Way More Mids Switch: Alters the scoop or emphasis in the upper midrange within the main distortion stage. It also changes how dynamically the amp responds to your guitar's volume knob.
