Beautiful and original 1964 Gibson Firebird III, free from any breaks or cracks.
The Firebird was designed in the early 1960s by automotive designer Ray Dietrich. In my view, one of Gibson’s finest designs.
Not only is the shape striking, it also sounds quite different from many other Gibsons. Firebird pickups have a lower output and more top end than, for example, a Les Paul. The tone is very open, clear and percussive, with a lovely ‘bite’.
The guitar has been set up with a low action and plays very well across the entire neck. It is currently fitted with a MojoAxe bridge for improved intonation, though the original bridge is included. It has a medium neck profile, measuring .80 inch / 20.3 mm at the first fret, increasing to .94 inch / 23.8 mm at the 12th fret. The nut width is 43 mm (1 11/16 inch).
Due to the neck-through construction and long headstock, Firebirds are more prone to headstock breaks. Many examples have therefore been repaired over the years. This particular guitar, however, is completely free from any breaks or cracks. The finish is also entirely original and has no overspray.
The guitar is entirely original, aside from three potentiometers and the braided wire from the bridge pickup to the pot (only this braided wire has been replaced; the pickup and its windings remain original and untouched).
The guitar comes with its original case and a CITES certificate (due to the Brazilian rosewood fingerboard).
If you have any questions or would like to see more photos of the guitar, please feel free to get in touch. The guitar can be shipped, or you are very welcome to view and try it in The Hague.
