Olympic White over a solid alder body, a gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish that ages the way lacquer is supposed to age, and a maple neck carved to a Thick C profile with a round laminated rosewood fingerboard. This is the mid sixties Stratocaster recipe exactly as Fender wrote it down: three Pure Vintage '65 Gray Bottom single coils with alnico 5 magnets, enamel coated magnet wire and staggered pole pieces, a three ply mint green pickguard, aged white plastics and a Pure Vintage synchronized tremolo with bent steel saddles. The Pure Vintage '65 set sits at roughly 5.9k, which means low output, sweet and open highs, a full and expressive midrange and the kind of clean headroom that made the surf and soul records of 1965 sound the way they do. It is a pickup set that rewards a clean amp and loves pedals. Where the Fender American Original series differs from a pure reissue is playability: the 9.5" fingerboard radius and vintage tall frets make bending effortless, and the modern five position blade switch gives you the two in between positions without any of the balancing act the originals demanded. Add the 1.650 inch bone nut, the Pure Vintage single line Fender Deluxe tuning machines and the vintage style truss rod, and you have a Stratocaster that looks and sounds period correct but plays like a guitar built for now. Olympic White with a mint green guard remains the most quietly confident colour combination Fender ever put on a Strat.
