This has to be Fender’s most unique offset design! The Terry-1 was a limited run of 150 made by Fender Japan in honor of Japanese surf-rock/“Eleki” pioneer Takeshi "Terry" Terauchi. It appeared in the catalog from 1993-1994. The design took cues from Mosrite and Yamaha guitars Terry previously played, leading to a one of a kind offset tele surf machine! The guitar was part of Fender Japan’s highest tier “Custom Edition” line led by Makoto Sugimoto, now known for Sugi guitars and building Ibanez’ top of the line instruments.
Fujigen spared no expense with this guitar. It has a bound basswood body, bound maple neck with a contoured heel and Mosrite-style volute, and rosewood board with pearloid inlays that subtly spell Terry’s name. The roller bridge vibrato design is unique to this guitar. 250mm (9.84”) neck radius, 24 3/4” scale. The catalog calls the color terry pink color, but it’s really more red. 3 “Terry Special” pickups.
The wiring scheme is very clever, it’s essentially the same as a tele, with a push push/volume knob adding in the middle pickup coil for a boost/girth (like a reverse coil tap).
Good condition, comes with Fender Custom Edition badged OHSC that Terry signed. No case candy unfortunately.
Wear (more pictures available on request, descriptions are to the best of my ability):
- Gold plating has worn on the neck plate, cavity cover, bridge/bar, and bridge pickups
- ~1.2cm scrape on the back treble side edge
- ~0.9cm scratch on the bass side lower bout edge
- Some binding discoloration by the top of the headstock
- ~1.5cm scuff by jack
- ~1mm dings on bottom edge of guitar, bass side upper bout edge, and bottom edge by binding
- Hairline marks on treble side of neck (around frets 6/7), back/sides of body
- ~0.4cm hairline mark on treble side horn edge
- Some scratching/wear on the case
I don’t know if it’s inherent to the bridge design, but repeated counter-clockwise rotation of the bar will loosen the set screw (upon which it can be finger tightened). Normal use/clockwise rotation works perfectly. I replaced one of the washers with a thicker spacer to improve the vibrato bar height (original included).
