Supertone Open back 5 sting 1920's

1920's Supertone 5 sting open back banjo with original case.

The banjo is in barely playable condition. Really could use a complete re-fret and new head.

Can't expect much from old friction tuners either.

The case is in bad shape and starting to fall apart, but it came with the banjo so it is part of the deal.

This banjo is a labor of love situation. Very cool wall hanger and or collectable. It has 38 lugs which is odd and the original calfskin head.

Key Characteristics of Your Banjo

• The Manufacturer: John Henry Buckbee operated a massive factory in New York until 1897, supplying thousands of instruments to major mail-order catalogs. A single star inlay on the peghead was their signature visual stamp, later continuing onto early Sears Supertone models.
• The 38-Lug Rim: Most standard banjos feature 18 to 24 lugs. A count of 38 brackets means the metal lugs are placed incredibly close together. This was designed to distribute tension perfectly across the calfskin heads used at the time, preventing warping and providing a distinct, bright tonal resonance.
• The Rim Construction: Banjos from this era with this many lugs often feature a "spun-over" rim, where a thin layer of nickel-plated brass is wrapped directly over a solid wooden rim structure.
