The Pignose Piggy-In-A-Box is a compact analog overdrive, distortion, and preamp unit based on the circuitry of the Pignose 7-100 portable amplifier. It places the characteristic Pignose amp sound into a stomp box format, reproducing the ragged, compressed overdrive associated with the original battery-powered practice amp. The pedal covers a gain range from moderate overdrive to heavily saturated distortion and fuzz textures associated with the original 7-100 amplifier circuit.

Unlike a conventional distortion pedal, the Piggy-In-A-Box can also operate as a low-wattage amplifier head. In addition to functioning as a preamp or standalone gain effect, the unit includes a speaker output capable of driving an external speaker cabinet directly. Various descriptions identify the unit as capable of powering cabinets ranging from small practice speakers to 4 x 12 cabinets at practice-level volume. The pedal was also used as a direct recording or stage preamp by routing its preamp output into a larger amplifier, PA system, or recording console, following the same application methods associated with the original Pignose 7-100 amplifier.

The circuit retains the simple control structure associated with the original amplifier design, using a combined volume and gain-oriented control approach to vary both output level and distortion intensity. Some versions additionally include a push-pull boost function for increased gain. The pedal operates from either six AA batteries or an external AC adapter and uses an analog signal path with buffered bypass operation. Production versions were housed in a compact metal enclosure with brown covering material visually derived from the original Pignose amplifier design. The model has since been discontinued.

The original Pignose 7-100 portable amplifier itself was introduced as a compact battery-powered practice amplifier with a 5-inch speaker and a single volume control that also functions as the power switch. Its circuit produces a wide gain range from relatively clean tones to heavily distorted output, with the distortion characteristics forming the basis of the Piggy-In-A-Box pedal design. The amplifier also includes a preamp output for routing its signal into larger amplification or recording systems.
