Picked this up to get that old-school Yamaha OPL3 FM chip into a box I could actually sequence and jam with.

It has six drum voices and four synth parts running on the same chip that powered a ton of early-90s PC game audio, built into a proper 64-step groovebox with fader automation, per-step tricks, and song chaining.

Full disclosure: I never quite got it to sing the way I wanted. FM synthesis is its own language, and dialing in punchy, usable drum and bass sounds took more patience than I had bandwidth for.

Everything works exactly as it should: patterns, kits, MIDI, quad outs, all of it. If you already speak FM (or want to learn it properly), you'll get a lot more out of this than I did.

What makes it worth a look regardless: the engine has real character — glassy, metallic, aggressive all at once — and the design is genuinely clever. It comes with a browser-based pattern visualizer and settings editor, so instead of menu-diving on the hardware, you can see all six drum lanes and four synth tracks at once, follow busy 64-step patterns visually, and set MIDI channels, mutes, solos, program changes, and output routing from one screen. Turns a fiddly little FM box into something you can actually read and edit properly.
