The Les Paul Custom model, produced by the Gibson Custom Shop, has been one of the best-selling and most sought-after models in the Gibson catalog for decades.
It is one of the most elegant and representative instruments of the Nashville brand, as well as one of the most coveted.
Specifically, this version features a long scale length of 25.5", designed to deliver optimal performance with lower and dropped tunings. The greater scale length ensures higher string tension, maintaining precise attack and a more stable response even in the most extreme tunings.
The Les Paul Custom model was introduced in its current configuration with two humbucker pickups in 1957. The guitar from that time, still in production today (Gibson Custom 1957 Les Paul Custom) - also known as "Black Beauty" - differs in some technical details from this version, which is more affordable and has a more modern setup.
The Gibson Custom Les Paul Custom Ebony Fingerboard Gloss features a mahogany body paired with a maple top, unlike the Black Beauty model which has a mahogany top: acoustically, the presence of maple adds greater brightness, translating into defined and open distorted tones.
Other differences can be found in the neck profile, which is smaller and more comfortable, while still maintaining dimensions that ensure, along with the "long tenon" joint, excellent sound transmission and infinite sustain.
The pickups consist of a pair of Gibson 490R and 498T, respectively equipped with Alnico II and Alnico V magnets, capable of producing powerful, defined, aggressive tones on overdrive, while simultaneously delivering rich and warm sounds on clean settings.
Notably, for 2019, Gibson has reverted to using an ebony fingerboard for this model, a wood that is increasingly difficult to source on a large scale, but which was essential for this rich and elegant model.
