Danelectro. Airline. Pawnshop.

Here is a Montgonery Ward Airline from 1964. These were made by Danelectro as a 5 watt introductory model that spawned many a garage rock band. It's a Nugget (get it?).

This one is in near mint condition and all original. It's been brought up to power properly with an autovariac and played hard for an our. It's basically a Fender Champ clone and sounds sweet. Nice and clean with single coils or growly and raw with humbuckers once the tubes get cooking. This amp is part of a collection that was purchased new by the original owner and displayed in a climate controlled setting. It still has it's original tubes, speaker and two-pronged plug.

In the early '60s, the popularity of the electric guitar created new opportunities for mail-order catalogs and department stores alike to fill American homes with products that fulfilled aspiring musicians' rock 'n' roll desires.

This 1964 Airline Model 62-9012A was made by Danelectro and sold in the Montgomery Ward catalog. It is essentially a copy of a Champ: 12ax7 preamp tube, 6V6 power tube, 6" Alnico speaker, a volume control, and a tone control. This one is in remarkably clean condition, and it appears to be all original (including 2-prong cord and external speaker out). It sounds fantastic with a variety of different pickups, but hot humbuckers push this amp into smooth, overdrive saturation. The tone control is interesting because it functions a lot like a tone control on a guitar. Also, this one has a sought-after Amperex "Bugle Boy" ECC83 in the preamp position. Such a rad vintage piece!
