WAYANG KULIT is a traditional performing arts of puppet-shadow play that is mainly developed in Java, Indonesia. Wayang comes from the word 'Ma Hyang' which means to the spiritual spirit, god, or God Almighty. There is also a mean wayang is a Javanese term meaning 'shadow', this is because the audience can also watch the puppet from behind the screen or just the shadow only.

In a wayang kulit performance, the puppet figures are rear-projected on a taut linen screen with a coconut-oil (or electric) light. The Dalang (puppeteer ) who is also a narrator of dialogue of wayang figures, manipulates carved leather figures between the lamp and the screen to bring the shadows to life, accompanied by gamelan music played by a group of nayaga and tembang sung by the pesinden.

In order to understand the wayang story, the audience must have knowledge of the wayang figures whose shadow appears on the screen. In general wayang takes the story from the Mahabharata and Ramayana texts, but not limited to the standard, the puppeteer can also play the carangan (composition) play. Some stories are taken from Panji's story. Wayang kulit is among the best known, offering a unique combination of ritual, lesson and entertainment.
