The Rex AG6T is a rare Australian-made 6-watt valve guitar amplifier with a fascinating connection to Melbourne's amplifier-building history. Originally produced in the early 1960s by General Music, the manufacturing arm of Lamberti Bros, the AG6T was a compact single-ended valve amplifier with built-in tremolo and a distinctive character of its own.
This 2019 reissue was built by Lou Dallariva, who worked in the Lamberti Bros amplifier workshop during the early 1970s. Following the closure of Lamberti Bros in 2018, Dallariva acquired the company's remaining amplifier stock and components, allowing him to recreate the AG6T using a combination of original period parts and carefully selected new components.
Construction combines an original gold faceplate and period-correct 1960s red Nylex vinyl with new resistors and capacitors, Australian-made Voller transformers, antique gold-coloured speaker cloth and a Jensen Special Design C10Q 10-inch speaker. The valve circuit uses an EL84 power valve alongside 12AX7 and 6AV4 valves, producing approximately 6 watts through a simple single-ended output stage.
The low-powered design delivers the immediacy, compression and natural overdrive associated with small vintage valve amplifiers, while the onboard tremolo adds classic pulsing modulation. With enough output for recording and lower-volume playing while being easy to push into power-stage saturation, the AG6T is a particularly characterful piece of Australian amplifier design.
Only two examples of this 2019 reissue were reportedly built by Lou Dallariva, making it an exceptionally unusual continuation of an obscure Australian amplifier from the early 1960s.
