Edwards E-PB-95R/LT is a Japanese bass guitar manufactured in 2013 at the ESP factory. This model is a precise reissue of PB-style basses. The letters "LT" in the name stand for the "Lacquer Taste" finish, characterized by the application of a thin top coat of nitrocellulose lacquer over a polyurethane base. This unit features a Lake Placid Blue finish with a matching headstock. After our service work, which included fret dressing and shielding of the electronics with copper foil, the bass is ready to play.

Body and construction The solid body is made of alder. The instrument features a "Lacquer Taste" finish in Lake Placid Blue. A traditional Bolt-on construction is used, with a precisely fitted neck pocket. In our workshop, the electronics cavities were completely shielded with copper foil. The lacquer coating went through a cleaning and polishing process.

Neck and ergonomics The maple neck has a Vintage Oval profile (similar to a "C" profile). The front of the headstock is finished in the body color (matching headstock). The neck is paired with a rosewood fingerboard. The Medium Jumbo frets underwent a dressing process (leveling and polishing) during our service work. The fingerboard surface was cleaned and conditioned with lemon oil and wax.

Sound The instrument is equipped with a single Split-Coil pickup (Seymour Duncan SPB-2) in a passive circuit.

  • Characteristics: The combination of an alder body and a "Hot" version pickup generates a frequency response with pronounced mids and a slightly boosted output signal compared to standard vintage-style layouts.
  • Dynamics: The passive electronics, controlled by Volume and Tone potentiometers, respond directly to articulation strength. The applied shielding lowers the circuit's susceptibility to external electromagnetic interference.

Additional information

The Edwards brand belongs to the Japanese ESP corporation and is primarily intended for the domestic market (JDM), offering instruments with specifications similar to higher-end historical series.

The "Lacquer Taste" (LT) finish is a technology that utilizes a polyurethane base coat covered by a thin top layer of nitrocellulose lacquer.

The Seymour Duncan SPB-2 pickup features overwound coils, resulting in a higher output signal and a stronger attack compared to the classic SPB-1 model.

The service work we performed included: fret dressing, full copper electronics shielding, finish polishing, fingerboard conditioning, hardware cleaning, and scale length setup.

Hardware

  • Bridge: Spiral Saddle Vintage-Style – a steel construction with threaded (spiral) saddles, allowing for precise adjustment of string spacing.
  • Tuners: Gotoh Vintage-Style FB3 – open-back mechanisms with classic buttons. The hardware went through a cleaning process and retains its full mechanical efficiency.

Instrument condition

  • Technical condition: The instrument is mechanically and electronically functional after a luthier verification. The truss rod works properly, and the frets are leveled.
  • Visual condition: The guitar shows visible signs of use. Scratches and minor abrasions resulting from the characteristics of the wear-prone "Lacquer Taste" finish can be noticed on the lacquer coating. The instrument has no structural wood cracks.
  • Setup and Modifications: Copper foil shielding of the electronics cavities, fret dressing, lacquer conditioning, and a setup of the scale length and string action were performed. According to verification, the instrument retains its original factory specification.

Why choose this instrument

  • Seymour Duncan pickup: The factory installation of the SPB-2 model eliminates the need for modifications for those seeking a stronger signal.
  • Lacquer Taste finish: The use of an outer layer of nitrocellulose is a valued aesthetic detail that wears naturally over time.
  • Gotoh hardware: The factory use of Japanese Gotoh tuners guarantees smooth and accurate operation of the tuning mechanisms.
  • Ready to play: After our service work, the bass is fully prepared for regular playing without the need for additional luthier visits.
