1984 Ludwig LB552K Hand-Hammered Bronze 6.5x14" Snare Drum - Rare Early Production
The Ultimate Holy Grail Ludwig Bronze Snare
Up for sale is an incredibly rare, early production 1984 Ludwig 6.5x14" 10-lug Hammered Bronze snare drum. If you know Ludwig history, you know that the early 1980s marked the absolute pinnacle of their heavyweight bronze shell production. This specific 1984 model features exquisite, fine hand-hammering which is visually tighter and more granular than the machine-hammered versions that followed later in the decade.
The Ultra-Rare 1984 Chicago "Transition" Badge
Adding massive collector value to this drum is the legendary Large Chicago Keystone Badge. Ludwig only produced this specific large keystone style with "Chicago, USA" stamped at the bottom for a brief window in 1984. It represents the final, glorious batch of drums crafted in the historic Chicago factory right before operations moved to Monroe, North Carolina. You simply do not see these badges on bronze drums!
The Legendary "Super Wide" Bottom Flange
This drum features the legendary extra wide bottom flange bearing edge, a structural detail that only these early 80s models possess. The wider the flange at the bottom bearing edge, the fatter the sound. This specific design element is exactly what gives this vintage shell its unmatched low-end "oomph"—a premium feature that modern reissues simply do not replicate.
The Sound: Richer, Fatter, More Articulate
Because of the smaller, tighter hand-hammering pattern paired with that ultra-wide bottom flange, this drum sounds even fatter, warmer, and more complex than later 80s models. It delivers a massive, robust body while remaining incredibly sensitive and articulate for intricate stick work.
Condition & Specifications
• Shell: Structurally perfect and in excellent vintage condition. It features the light, honest "freckling" typical of raw Ludwig bronze from this era, giving it a stunning vintage character.
• Muffler: The original internal tone control muffler is in place and works flawlessly.
• Throw-Off Upgrade: Upgraded to an expensive Ludwig P86B Millennium Snare Strainer (Brass Plated). It looks incredible on this shell, is highly superior to the original, and works smoothly.
• Butt Plate Upgrade: Upgraded to an INDE butt plate, allowing you to easily adjust or change snare wires using a standard drum key instead of a screwdriver.
• Heads & Wires: Ships with the original Ludwig bottom snare head and original Ludwig snare wires!
Note on Hardware: Both of the original vintage Ludwig parts are widely available on the aftermarket if you wish to source them. However, I may also have the option to swap original 80s parts from my other Ludwig snare. If having the fully stock original throw-off and butt plate is important to you, please message me before purchasing to discuss!
⚠️ PLEASE NOTE REGARDING PHOTOS:
• Studio Session Photo: I have included a photo from a recent recording studio session where I used this exact snare. The tracking results were absolutely amazing—it sits beautifully in a mix and sounds incredible under microphones!
• Two Drums Pictured: I have included a side-by-side comparison photo next to a later 80s model strictly to demonstrate how much finer and more granular the 1984 hand-hammering is. The second snare drum is NOT included.
• Wood Hoops Pictured: You will see a photo featuring vintage Yamaha wooden hoops to showcase its versatility. The Yamaha wooden hoops are NOT included. The drum will ship with its original triple-flanged hoops.
This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Ludwig history that easily outperforms modern alternatives. It will be packed with professional care and shipped safely and securely. Priced to sell!
