This is the original RAT large box, released in 1979, labeled FILTER!
The Rat featured a filter control that replaced the previous "TONE" (and was the opposite of the current one!) with the familiar "FILTER" designation. This is a late-model large-case model, just before the change to the small-case RAT I (the very first models had a reversed black and white logo!). The rugged, simple chassis exudes a unique atmosphere.
The LM308N op amp was consistently used from its inception through to the RAT II around 2000. While Motorola LM308Ns were also used from the RAT I onwards, National Semiconductor seemed to be the only choice for the large-case model. While the basic design remained the same, differences in tone and texture can be discerned across eras. Compared to the late 1980s RAT I, the distortion is slightly more subtle and the sound is smoother. Even legendary guitarist Jeff Beck has been using this guitar since the large case was introduced. It still includes the battery holder, which is often missing, and of course, the powerful sound is outstanding! This model is now almost impossible to find, both domestically and internationally.
