Authentic vintage North African bendir, handcrafted using traditional methods with a natural animal skin head and internal sympathetic strings.
This instrument features a 33 cm (13”) diameter frame, an 8 cm deep shell, and three traditional gut-style strings mounted beneath the playing surface. These strings vibrate sympathetically with the drumhead, producing the characteristic buzzing resonance that distinguishes the bendir from other frame drums.
The shell is entirely covered in natural skin and includes the traditional side thumb hole for comfortable playing. The drum displays the beautiful patina, wear, and character expected from an older handmade instrument.
Originally used throughout Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia in traditional folk, Berber, Gnawa, and Sufi music, the bendir remains one of the most iconic percussion instruments of North Africa.
