For sale: a pair of sE Electronics R1 ribbon microphones, in excellent condition and perfectly preserved.

Always stored upright (vertically) when not in use, ensuring careful handling and storage of the delicate ribbon elements.

One of them has a few minor paint chips on the back, caused by removing a sticker that was previously attached (see photo).

The R1 is a passive, bi-directional (figure-of-eight) ribbon microphone featuring a 1.8-micron aluminium ribbon and neodymium magnets. It delivers the smooth, natural and warm character associated with ribbon microphones, making it particularly suitable for electric guitars, guitar cabinets, brass, vocals and stereo recording.

Unlike older ribbon designs, the R1 handles (very) high SPL (up to 135dB), so you can use it on guitar cabs, brass, and drums without worry. The figure-8 polar pattern makes it a natural fit for stereo techniques like Blumlein or mid-side.

Like the Royer R-121, the sE R1 features an offset ribbon construction, resulting in slightly different tonal characteristics between the front and rear sides. The front side offers slightly more high-frequency presence, while the rear sounds somewhat darker. This characteristic provides additional tonal options when recording.

The R1 has an interesting technical background. Its design features an offset ribbon construction, a technology associated with Royer Labs and covered by their US patent US6434252.

This particular design approach was surrounded by patent-related controversy within the ribbon microphone industry. Although there is no documented evidence that Royer legally forced sE Electronics to discontinue the R1, its construction makes it an interesting model in the history of modern ribbon microphones.
