The Kingsley Jester V2 is widely regarded as one of Simon Jarrett’s finest all-tube gain designs. Built around two 12AX7 vacuum tubes running at high plate voltages (around 250V–300V internal B+), it delivers genuine, touch-sensitive tube amp dynamics, sag, and harmonic richness rather than solid-state or digital clipping approximations.

Unlike pure preamp pedals intended to feed a power amp directly, the Jester circuit is tailored as a tube overdrive and boost front-end, design-wise functioning as an additional, highly flexible gain channel in front of a clean tube platform or IR loader.

​Core Features & Topology

​Dual-Channel / Independent Layout: Features dedicated footswitches for Overdrive (Gain channel) and Boost. The Boost side operates independently or stacked into/after the overdrive side to push the circuit harder.

​True High Voltage: Operates off a 12VDC power supply (center-positive, consuming ~500mA), internally stepping up to true high-voltage tube operation.

​V2 Design Updates: Compared to the larger enclosure of the original V1, the V2 brought a more compact footprint, updated power supply filtering, and an added rear panel Sizzle / Brightness trim control to fine-tune high-end presence into varying backlines.

​Gain & Volume: Controls the gain structure from light edge-of-breakup to thick, singing tube saturation.

​3-Band Post-Gain EQ: Dedicated Bass, Middle, and Treble knobs shape the driven tone post-clipping.

​3-Way Overdrive Mode Switch:

​Mode 1 (Low Gain): Open, uncompressed, dynamic breakup with maximum touch response.

​Mode 2 (Medium Gain): Classic organic tube drive, balanced midrange punch.

​Mode 3 (High Gain): Thicker, smoother, slightly more compressed saturation with sustain.

​Boost Volume: Adjusts overall boost level.

​3-Way Boost Mode Switch:

​Mode 1 (Fat / Full-Range): Full-frequency boost that adds weight and low-end warmth.

​Mode 2 (Treble / Bright): Clarifies dark pickups and tightens up the low end for cut.

​Mode 3 (Mid-Range): Focused mid push that cuts through a dense band mix or drives an already edge-of-breakup gain stage into sustained lead territory.

​Performance & Integration

​Volume Knob Clean-Up: Because the gain comes entirely from 12AX7 triodes, riding your guitar's volume knob cleans up the drive smoothly into glassy, dynamic cleans without loss of treble.

​Pedal Stacking: Outstanding as a foundation or secondary gain stage. Stacks exceptionally well with external Germanium/Silicon fuzzes, boosters (like a Treble Booster or Power Booster), or transparency-focused drives on the input side.
